Cyanotype: life of water and business card design

The personal business card designed by myself. The idea come from the cyanotype prints, which is related to the theme, ‘Life of Water’. I chose to use images of water in this project because I am fascinated with the variety form of the water. ‘Be water my friend’ said by Bruce Lee. He suggested that people’s though should be shapeless, formless, like water. I captured the water of different form in the series, such as water drop on my notebook cover, bubbles in soft drink, water flushing from tap and leaves on water drop etc. The different forms of water represent different situation of human thoughts and emotional changes which is one of the reason that I chose the theme.

Therefore, the color of the product of cyanotype have a intimate relationships with water. Although water contain different color in different environment and situation, mostly it shows in the color of blue. There is a rigid cognition that water is blue. It also become a traditional way to describe water as blue.

The process is the same as cyanotype. First, I edited photos in photoshop to make sure they have strong contrast for printing. Then, I painted cyanotype chemical on A5 size watercolour paper and waited for them to dry. Put the object on top of the paper. After that, put the watercolour paper on top of a wooden board and cover the paper with a piece of water glasses. Put the whole setting into the UV light box and expose for 25 mins. Next, soak the paper into water till the yellow chemical vanish. At last, put the paper on a flat surface and wait till it dry. I made nine cyanotypes, and select one as my business card elements which I satisfied.
